Rivers NBA Reject SOLAD Query Issued To Its Chairman

The Rivers State Branch Chairmen of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have rejected a query issued by Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State.

The NBA chairmen, representing the eight branches in the state, condemned the query.

This rejection is part of ongoing tensions between the NBA and Ibas, stemming from his administration’s actions following the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025.

The NBA has accused Ibas of constitutional violations, including the suspension of elected officials and undemocratic appointments, which they argue undermine democratic institutions.

The association has also criticized Ibas for operating with disregard for constitutional provisions and ongoing litigation.

In response, Ibas has defended his actions, asserting that the emergency rule was necessary to restore stability and that his administration respects judicial rulings, including those of the Supreme Court.

Additionally, a related dispute involves the NBA’s relocation of its 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) from Port Harcourt to Enugu, citing Ibas’ “unconstitutional” governance. Ibas demanded a refund of ₦300 million paid by the Rivers State Government, claiming it was for hosting rights.

The NBA, however, insisted the payment was an unconditional gift, not tied to hosting rights, and refused to refund it.

The NBA’s rejection of the query aligns with their broader stance against Ibas’ administration, emphasizing their commitment to upholding the rule of law and democratic governance.

They have called for the reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials, urging President Bola Tinubu to review the emergency governance framework in Rivers State.
