Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, 28, the youngest son of the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, reportedly collapsed twice while in custody at Bramley Police Station following his arrest on charges of attempted murder.
The arrest followed a shooting at his Johannesburg residence in the affluent Hyde Park neighborhood on Thursday, in which a 23-year-old gardener sustained critical injuries.
Mugabe and another man were initially held for questioning before being formally charged with attempted murder.
According to news24, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, 28, collapsed twice while in police custody, first on Thursday night and again in the early hours of Friday.
The episodes are believed to be linked to a pre-existing medical condition, raising concerns about his health during detention.
The shooting at Mugabe’s Hyde Park residence prompted a major police operation, with authorities deploying K-9 units and divers to search for the firearm allegedly used.
While spent cartridges were recovered at the scene, the weapon itself has not yet been located.
Mugabe is expected to appear before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday for a bail hearing.
The 23-year-old gardener injured in the shooting remains in critical condition at a Johannesburg hospital.
The case has attracted significant attention due to Mugabe’s high-profile family background. His mother, Grace Mugabe, was previously involved in a widely publicized legal dispute in South Africa in 2017 over claims of diplomatic immunity following an alleged assault.
Police investigations into the circumstances of the shooting, including the whereabouts of the missing firearm, are ongoing.
