Security Operatives Arrest 4 Suspected Bandits Hibernating Near Akure Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed the arrest of four suspected bandits within the vicinity of Akure Airport in Ondo State following a coordinated security operation involving multiple agencies.

In a statement issued on Sunday, FAAN said the suspects were apprehended after a distress alert reported suspicious movements behind the airport perimeter towards the Eleyeowo community.

Security personnel from FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and other local security outfits swiftly launched a joint search operation in response to the alert.

During the operation, some of the suspects reportedly attempted to flee the area but were eventually apprehended by the joint security team. The four individuals have since been handed over to the Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force for further interrogation and investigation.

FAAN commended the swift collaboration among aviation security personnel, the military, the police, and local security groups, including the Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes, whose coordinated efforts led to the successful arrests.

The authority noted that the incident underscores the need to strengthen security around airport perimeters nationwide. It added that the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has begun implementing measures to upgrade perimeter fencing and enhance security infrastructure at airports across the country with the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

FAAN further disclosed that the security upgrade project is already being implemented in phases to ensure airports under its management are better protected against unlawful access and other potential threats.

The agency reassured the travelling public and host communities of its continued commitment to maintaining the safety and security of airport facilities nationwide.

The statement was signed by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN.
