Tinubu Sends Delegation To Intervene In Ekweremadu’s Imprisonment In UK

President Bola Tinubu has has intervened on the imprisonment of former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu by a British Court over organ trafficking offences.

As part of the intervention of the Federal Government, a high-level delegation led by the Minister of of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar and minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Mr. Lateef Fagbemi has visited the UK.

The delegation arrived London on Monday with have met with officials of the UK’s ministry of justice.

According to Alkasim Abdulkadir, the spokesman of the Foreign Affairs minister, the delegation while in the UK will interface with UK authorities to explore possibilities of allowing Sen. Ekweremadu to serve out his jail term in Nigeria.

Ekweremadu alongside his wife, Beatrice were convicted by a London Crown Court in 2023 following their earlier arrest by the London Metropolitan Police in June of 2022 over allegations of breaching UK laws on organ trafficking.

Though no country has the power of interference with UK laws within its territory, convicts could be allowed to serve out their jail term in agreement with UK authorities.

Mrs. Ekweremadu was released in January 2025 after completing her sentence.
