Traders, Shoppers in Panic, As Another Inferno Engulf Arena Market in Lagos

Chaos erupted at the popular Arena Market in Oshodi, Lagos, on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 evening as a devastating fire tore through multiple sections of the busy marketplace, leaving traders and shoppers in panic.

The blaze reportedly began around 6 PM, quickly spreading as thick smoke enveloped the Area.

Videos shared on X (formerly Twitter) show traders frantically trying to salvage their goods while firefighters struggled to contain the inferno.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of confusion and desperation, with market occupants running in all directions to escape the flames. Despite the dramatic visuals circulating online, authorities have not yet released official figures on casualties or the extent of property losses.

The latest incident adds to a string of recent market fires in Lagos, highlighting persistent concerns over fire safety and infrastructure at major trading hubs.

Just a week ago, a fire incident at the iconic Balogun Market on Lagos Island caused significant destruction. Flames, which originated at the Great Nigeria Insurance building on Martins Street, quickly spread to five adjacent buildings, leaving traders counting heavy losses during the holiday season.

Arena Market itself has suffered similar misfortunes this year.

In August 2025, another fire swept through the market, reportedly triggered by a power surge, though some traders dismissed this claim.

That earlier blaze resulted in losses running into millions of naira, further deepening traders’ anxieties.

Market traders have now called on Lagos authorities to implement stronger preventive measures and ensure rapid emergency responses, noting that repeated fire outbreaks are threatening their livelihoods.

The lack of timely interventions has fueled fears that the city’s markets remain vulnerable to similar disasters in the future.

As the firefighting teams continue their work, residents and business owners are anxiously awaiting official updates on the situation.

The Lagos State Government is expected to provide details on the cause of the blaze and plans to safeguard traders moving forward.
