A tragic incident has shaken the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Koroma/Saakpenwa, Ogoni, Rivers State, following the sudden death of an 18-year-old student, Ebirien Godwin, just days after his matriculation.
Godwin, who hailed from Andoni Local Government Area and was due to turn 19 in three days, was reportedly found unconscious on campus. According to sources, his roommates immediately contacted his father, Mr. Emmanuel Ebirien, urging him to come to the school without delay.
On arrival, Mr. Ebirien met his son in an unresponsive condition. The teenager was rushed to a nearby hospital, where a doctor later confirmed him dead.
Speaking amid grief, the bereaved father said he inquired from his son’s roommates about the circumstances leading to the incident. They allegedly informed him that Godwin had attended a birthday celebration where students were playfully splashing water on one another. During the activity, he was reportedly pushed, fell, and sustained a head injury after hitting the tiled floor. He was said to have subsequently succumbed to the injury.
Mr. Ebirien has called for a thorough investigation into the incident and demanded that anyone found culpable be held accountable.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of the university had yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
Further details are expected as the family and members of the university community seek clarity over the circumstances surrounding the tragic loss.
