Two Paris-based surgeons have been barred from medical practice following the death of 65-year-old Belgian-Israeli diamond dealer Ehud Arye Laniado, who suffered a fatal heart attack during a penile enlargement procedure at the Saint-Honoré-Ponthieu clinic in Paris.
The lead surgeon, identified as Guy H., was known to have treated Laniado several times a year during expensive, after-hours cosmetic procedures. On the night of the incident, Guy H. was not present and had reportedly arranged for another surgeon to stand in for him, a decision that later came under scrutiny during investigations.
According to court findings, Laniado began experiencing severe discomfort during the procedure. Although investigators ruled that the injection itself did not directly cause his death, serious concerns were raised over delays in calling emergency medical services. Reports revealed that Laniado had complained of abdominal pain and had a history of ulcers, yet he allegedly insisted on proceeding with the procedure.
Attempts were made to resuscitate him after he collapsed, but cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead.
A Paris court subsequently suspended Guy H.’s medical licence and sentenced him to 15 months in prison. The second surgeon involved received a 12-month suspended sentence. In addition, the court imposed heavy fines, with Guy H. ordered to pay €50,000, while the other surgeon was fined €20,000.
Sources familiar with the case noted that while the incident shocked the public, it highlighted ongoing concerns within elite cosmetic surgery circles, where the demands of wealthy clients sometimes place doctors under pressure to operate beyond ethical and medical limits.
