Valentine Ozigbo, 2021 Anambra Gubernatorial candidate and founder VCO Foundation, issues a strong signal about the deteriorating security situation in Anambra State.
Key Points:
1. SBM Intelligence report ranks Anambra as Nigeria’s kidnapping-for-ransom capital
2. Approximately N350 million paid in ransoms from July 2023 to July 2024
3. Urgent call for Governor Soludo to address the security crisis
Anambra State, once known for successfully tackling security challenges, now faces an alarming rise in kidnappings, killings, and robberies. A recent report by SBM Intelligence, a leading geopolitical research consultancy, has confirmed the fears of many citizens, revealing Anambra as the epicenter of kidnapping-for-ransom activities in Nigeria.
The report, covering July 2023 to July 2024, indicates that victims in Anambra paid approximately N350 million in ransoms, far surpassing the second-ranked Rivers State at N67 million.
Tragically, many victims lost their lives even after paying ransoms.
Dr. Ozigbo states, “This unwanted record is a stark contrast to the state’s security achievements under former Governor Peter Obi. It demonstrates a critical lapse in the current administration’s primary duty of securing lives and property.”
Ozigbo criticizes the current administration’s apparent indifference to the plight of citizens, citing recent attacks such as the destruction of Ogbaru Local Government headquarters. He calls on Governor Soludo to:
1. Acknowledge the severity of the security crisis
2. Take immediate and decisive action to combat criminal activities
3. Show empathy and support for victims and their families
“This SBM Intelligence report must serve as the ultimate wake-up call,” Ozigbo emphasizes. “I urge all stakeholders to join in pressuring the government to prioritize the safety of Anambra’s citizens and restore the state’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful.”
