Commercial drivers under the aegis of Drivers Welfare Club of Nigeria plying oyigbo, Aba road to abali park in Port Harcourt staging a peaceful Protest have been met with gun attacks on four drivers on Tuesday morning.
Speaking with Eastwestreporters on what led to the incident, The Oyigbo branch chairman who also doubles as the /state publicity secretary Christopher Ezeali said
“One mr Julius uzoma uchenna a member of NURTW National Union of Road Transport Workers, who is serving as an agent of the Obioakpor local government Taskforce tout, is the one that recruited boys between rumuola and GRA terrorizing, bullying, stealing and exploiting from drivers, hiding under Obioakpor local government decongestion committee
Every now and then they will forcefully beat up drivers and zoom away with your vehicle and demand #30,000 and above before your vehicle will be retrieve back
The same boys acting on Julius instructions held 3 of this union vehicles at G. R. A alledging they parked wrongly just in a bid to get money
So on Tuesday the drivers decided to withdraw their operation for the vehicles to be released unconditionally, then he came with armed men to shooting indiscriminately
The said Mr Julius uzoma uchenna drove in with his three police guards, on his way going started shooting at the drivers on that process about 4 drivers receive bullets wounds While his boys was throwing bottles and stones. So many persons also sustained various wounds due to the scampering for safety.
We are asking the Rivers State government to intervene and bring the culprit to book.
We are also aware that the governor gave tax waivers to cushion effects of patrol Subsidy removal for commercial drivers, why this particular man is insisting on collecting illegal fees is what we don’t know.’ Ezeali concluded.
