BENIN REPUBLIC UNIVERSITY DEGREE CERTIFICATE RACKETEERING:
The Senior Special Assistant To The President of The Federal Republic of Nigeria on Students Engagement, Hon. Comrade Sunday Dayo Asefon has expressed displeasure over the monumental degree certificate racketeering perpetrated by foreign Universities and has vowed to ensure thier de-recognition by the federal Ministry of Education.
Hon. Comrade Asefon disclosed the move to newsmen in Abuja through his Technical Assistant on Communication, Amb. Timothy Nwachukwu, while reacting to the trending news report of an undercover journalist from Daily Nigerian Newspaper, Umar Audu who unearthed the fake racketeering syndicate that specialises in selling infamous degree certificates from the neighboring countries to willing buyers.
According to the news report, Umar Audu an investigative journalist, purchased a Mass Communication degree certificate in 6 weeks from Ecole Superieure de Gestion et de Technologies, ESGT, Cotonou, Benin Republic, without application, registration, studying, writing exams or crossing Nigerian border and went ahead to participate in the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC).
The certificate and transcript purchased by the journalist indicated that he commenced the institution in 2018 and graduated on September 5, 2022.
But despite having the certificate and transcript in his possession, the reporter had fears they could be fake, until he discovered a scan code placed on the left bottom of the transcript, scanned through and directed him to the website of ESGT University, indicating that he is a genuine product of the institution.
Hon. Asefon described the action of the Benin Republic based University as a criminal offence and a disservice to Nigerian Students who toiled day and night for four years and more to legally obtain a University Degree.
He stated that most worrisome is the fact that the Benin Republic University selling their fake degree certificate is on the list of accredited Institutions by the Federal Ministry of Education according to the deputy director of Evaluation and Accreditation, Koli Salihu- Mongodiba.
Hon. Asefon said that his office will ensure that the already cleared 51 ESGT graduates who are currently participating in the NYSC are those who had benefited from the illegality from Benin Republic Universities are investigated and punitive measures meted to the culprits.
