YEAC-Nigeria Reports Fresh Crude Oil Spill From Pipeline Allegedly Belonging To Renaissance Africa Energy Ltd

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has confirmed a fresh crude oil spillage on a pipeline right of way belonging to Renaissance Africa Energy Ltd in Ikata community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The spillage, noticed in the afternoon of Friday, August 22, was reported to the Centre by its members under the auspices of the One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in the Niger Delta as well as the Crude Oil Spill Alert System (COSAS) in the community.

In a statement signed today in Port Harcourt by its Executive Director, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, the Centre said the spillage, suspected to be an alleged act of sabotage (third party interference), pending confirmation by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), was recorded on the 14-inch Okordia-Rumuekpe pipeline right of way owned and operated by Renaissance.

The organisation recalled that this is the second spill on the same pipeline right of way in Ikata community within three months, following a spillage confirmed and reported by the organisation in a statement on May 5, 2025.

This latest crude oil spill in Rivers State comes less than three weeks after an oil spill was reported in Kpean Community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State as reported by YEAC-Nigeria in a press release dated August 6, 2025, which a joint investigation visit carried out by NOSDRA confirmed to be due to equipment failure.

The Advocacy Centre thus calls on NOSDRA to carry out a joint investigation visit (JIV) to this new oil spill site in Ikata community to determine the actual cause of the spillage and invoke the relevant sections of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021, to hold the alleged perpetrators accountable.
