You Are A Two Months Senator – Oshiomhole Slams Umahi Over Works Budget Defence

A tense moment unfolded on Wednesday as Minister of Works, David Umahi, engaged in a heated exchange with Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, during the defence of the Ministry of Works’ proposed 2026 budget at the National Assembly.

The disagreement occurred while lawmakers were scrutinising the ministry’s spending plans and seeking clarifications on key infrastructure allocations.

In a video of the session that later circulated online, Umahi was seen confronting Oshiomhole over remarks he considered disrespectful, firmly objecting to the tone used during the discussion.

You can’t use foul language on me. I’m a distinguished Nigerian,” the minister said, visibly displeased.

The situation drew the attention of other lawmakers present, including Senator Rufai Sani Hanga of Kano Central, who intervened and urged the minister to moderate his response.

Hanga reminded Umahi of the decorum expected during legislative proceedings, reportedly telling him, “You are just two months a senator, Mr Umahi,” in reference to the minister’s relatively recent entry into the Senate following his transition from executive office.

Following the intervention, calm was gradually restored, and Senator Oshiomhole was allowed to continue his contribution to the budget deliberations.

The brief clash underscored the often intense nature of budget defence sessions, where ministers face rigorous questioning from lawmakers tasked with ensuring accountability and proper allocation of public funds.
