7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Myanmar, Killing Over 100 Persons, Properties Destroyed

powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked Myanmar on Friday, resulting in widespread devastation and loss of life.

According to the countryโ€™s military government, at least 144 people have been killed, and over 730 injured in the disaster.

The earthquake was followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock, causing tremors to be felt across Thailand and China. The quakeโ€™s impact was felt hundreds of miles away, with buildings collapsing in Thailand.

In Myanmarโ€™s capital, authorities are racing against time to rescue 81 people trapped under the rubble of an under-construction high-rise. At least three people have died in the capital, adding to the growing toll

Myanmar, already grappling with a civil war sparked by a 2021 military coup, is struggling to cope with the disaster. The countryโ€™s weak infrastructure and fragmented militia-controlled regions have hindered relief efforts and made it difficult to gather reliable information.

As the situation continues to unfold, concerns are growing about the potential long-term consequences of the earthquake on Myanmarโ€™s already vulnerable population.
