The Nigeria Police Force is currently grappling with a shocking incident that unfolded in the Surulere area of Lagos State on August 8, 2024, involving a tragic shooting among police aides assigned to Barrister Wale Fapohunda.
According to reports, the arrested suspect, Corporal Umar Lawal of SPU Base 10 Sokoto, found himself embroiled in a heated exchange over a second-hand phone sale with a man named Mr. Vincent, known locally as Dogman.
In a moment of rage, Lawal attempted to shoot Vincent but tragically missed, the bullet striking instead the unfortunate Gabriel Audu, a fellow aide, who succumbed to his injuries shortly after at a local hospital.
At around 10:22 p.m., the Control Room received an urgent call about the shooting, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. Officers rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where they detained Lawal and recovered the AK47 rifle used in the crime.
In his confession, Lawal expressed remorse, acknowledging that his intentions had gone horribly wrong. Gabriel, beloved by many, was transported to LUTH General Hospital in Idiaraba, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
As detectives continue their investigation, Gabriel’s body has been photographed and taken to the hospital morgue, awaiting an autopsy. The community reels from the senseless loss, questioning how a routine altercation over a phone could escalate to such deadly consequences.
