Why Bwala Was Demoted As Tinubu’s Spokesman Less Than 24 Hours After Appointment

Daniel Bwala’s role in President Bola Tinubu’s media team took a dramatic turn less than 24 hours after he appeared to assume the position of presidential spokesman.

Initially introduced as the special adviser on media and public communication, Bwala’s designation was quickly revised to a special adviser on policy communication.
According to The Cable, confusion started after Bwala addressed journalists at the State House, where he seemingly positioned himself as the president’s spokesperson.

This move raised eyebrows, especially since Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser on information and strategy, has been handling the president’s public statements since Ajuri Ngelale’s exit in September.

Sources revealed that President Tinubu, who is currently in Brazil for the G20 summit, was displeased upon learning of Bwala’s actions.

“It appeared he wanted to start using the office immediately. Incidentally, Onanuga, who moved into the office only recently, is currently with the president in Brazil for the G20 meeting, so it seemed Bwala wanted to take it over in his absence,” an insider told TheCable.

In response, Onanuga issued a statement clarifying that the presidency does not have a single spokesperson.

Instead, communication duties are shared among three advisers: Bwala, Onanuga, and Sunday Dare, the special adviser on media and public communications.

Moving forward, Bwala will focus on policy communication and is expected to collaborate with Hadiza Bala Usman, who oversees policy coordination in the presidency.
