How Gunmen Lured Obuoffia Community President General, Assassinate Him in Front of His Shop In Enugu

Chief Osita Mambo, the President General of Obuoffia community in Awkunanaw, Enugu State, has been murdered by gunmen suspected to be assassins.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to SaharaReporters on condition of anonymity, Mambo was shot and killed in front of his shop at Amaechi Awkunanaw on Thursday morning.

Sources revealed that Mambo was lured out of his shop by a phone call from someone he thought was a customer. However, as he stepped out, the assailants, numbering four, opened fire on him, raining about 25 bullets on his body.

“Immediately he came out, one of the assailants who were already waiting patiently for him in their car, came out and shot him.

“As he dashed to run away, the assailants numbering four came out and opened fire on him. They rained about 25 bullets on his body. After they ensured that he had died, they zoomed off without any challenge from security agencies,” one of the sources said.

This incident has sparked concerns about the escalating insecurity in Enugu State.

Nnaji Chima, a resident of the community, lamented that people often dismiss the severity of the security situation until they are directly affected.

“When we talk about the insecurity situation in Enugu State, people think it’s propaganda until such misfortunes land on their doorsteps,” Chima lamented.

SaharaReporters learned that Amaechi Awkunanaw, where the incident took place, has become a hotspot for killings in recent years, with most cases remaining uninvestigated.

Among these incidents was the assassination of Chief Oyibo Chukwu, a former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Labour Party senatorial candidate, who was murdered alongside his personal assistant in February 2023.

Similarly, three leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were also assassinated, yet to date, no arrests have been made in connection with these brutal killings.

Meanwhile, efforts to speak with the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, were unsuccessful as he did not answer his calls.

As of the time of filing this report, he had yet to respond to a text message seeking his comment on the incident.
