Be Part of The Leadership, Delegates, Not Floor Members -Aisha Yesufu Urges ADC to Include Youth, Women In Leadership Roles

Activist Aisha Yesufu has called on the newly formed coalition behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to ensure women and young people are actively involved in the party’s decision-making processes.

Yesufu, a co-convener of the defunct BringBackOurGirls movement, issued the call following the official unveiling of ADC as the coalition’s political platform. She shared her concerns in a social media post accompanied by a photo from the coalition’s recent meeting, which showed mostly elderly men occupying prominent seats at the high table.

“The table full of older generation men cannot be the only ones allowed to make the decisions,” she wrote. “Women and youth must be in the midst of decision-making and not as an afterthought or tokenism.”

The unveiling event saw former Senate President David Mark named as the ADC’s Interim National Chairman, signaling the start of the coalition’s broader political engagement.

While the positions of women leader and youth leader were acknowledged, Yesufu argued that such titles should not limit the extent of inclusion for women and young people.

“This is the time for the numbers you have to be heard loud and clear. Join! Be part of the leadership, be part of the delegates, be part of the floor members,” she urged.

Yesufu emphasized that meaningful participation from women and youth is crucial to bringing in “ideas from out of the box” and shaping a more inclusive political future.

Her remarks reflect a growing demand among civic voices for intergenerational equity and gender inclusion in Nigerian political leadership.

The ADC coalition comprises a mix of civil society actors, political figures, and reform-minded groups aiming to present an alternative political force ahead of future elections.
