A Federal High Court in Ibadan has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held in Oyo State on November 15, 2025, null and void, in a ruling that could significantly reshape the internal power structure of Nigeria’s main opposition party.
In its judgement delivered on Friday, the court also restrained members of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Tanimu Turaki from presenting themselves as legitimate national officers of the party.
Caretaker Committee Recognised as Interim Leadership
The court ruled that the Caretaker Committee headed by Mohammed Abdulrahman alongside Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the only recognised leadership of the PDP until a new and valid national convention is conducted in line with the party’s constitution and relevant laws.
The judgement effectively invalidates decisions and structures that emerged from the disputed Ibadan convention, further complicating the party’s ongoing leadership dispute.
Major Twist in PDP Leadership Crisis
The ruling represents a major turning point in the protracted internal crisis that has plagued the PDP since the 2023 general elections. The party has faced months of legal battles and factional disagreements, with different groups laying claim to control of the national structure.
The Ibadan convention itself had been controversial from the outset, with several factions challenging its legitimacy in court even before it was held.
Background to the Dispute
Prior to the convention, multiple court cases had questioned whether the party complied with constitutional and procedural requirements needed to organise a valid national convention, including the conduct of state congresses and proper notification to electoral authorities.
Some party factions had earlier approached the courts seeking to nullify the convention and prevent recognition of officials elected from it, intensifying the internal struggle for control of the PDP leadership structure.
Implications for the Opposition Party
Political analysts say the ruling could deepen divisions within the PDP but may also force the party to reset its leadership process and attempt reconciliation ahead of future electoral contests.
The judgement is expected to trigger fresh political negotiations, possible appeals, and renewed debate over the future direction of the party.
