Anambra Govt Issues Safety Directives to Town Unions On Christmas, New Year Celebrations

The National President, Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), Barr. Titus Akpudo has conveyed a message from the State Government to all Presidents-General of its Town Unions to ensure that the Christmas and New year celebrations are devoid of mis-happening’s and environmental degradation.

The message was titled, ‘Important Message From the State Government; Re: Yuletide Road Safety and Management Advisory’.

Barr. Akpudo in the opening of the circular, said, ”umunnem, the Anambra State Government, through the Office of ASATU National President, issues this advisory to ensure a safe and enjoyable yuletide season”.

According to the advisory, the government urged the people to, “prohibit tyre burning and other related items.

“The State government has strictly directed the citizens to refrain from burning tyres, fireworks, and other harmful materials on tarred roads, as this poses health, environmental, and economic risks to both the citizens and the State”.

On community vigilance, the circular directed thus: “Presidents-General must ensure that their communities comply with this directives and report any incidents to the authorities.

“The PGs are further mandated to work closely with officers of OCHA BRIGADE and the Nigeria Police Force for the enforcement of this directive and prosecution of the culprit(s)/ offender(s) in line with the Law. The local vigilante groups should be on ground to do the needful”.

The government according to the advisory and on the issue of Approved Road Modification, warned, “construction of bumps and speed breakers by individuals or groups on the roads constructed by the government without necessary approval by appropriate authority is unlawful and prohibited absolutely.

“It is very important to obtain necessary approvals from the Anambra State Ministry of Works before erecting speed breakers or bumps on government-constructed roads. The leadership of our various communities are directed to take responsibility”.

For consequences of non-compliance the government directed saying, “it is pertinent to note that failure to comply with the above directives may result in facing the full wrath of law, with community leadership (PGs) held accountable for incidents occurring within their jurisdictions”.

Reminding drivers on general safety, the government urged them to drive responsibly.

“It is advisable to avoid overloading, over speeding, and reckless driving so as to avoid unfortunate circumstances on our roads”.

On night travel and it’s avoidance, the government through the circular said, “it is very important to refrain from embarking on night journeys particularly this period due to increased risk of accidents”.

While on the issue of staying alert, the PGs were also advised to report any strange occurrences or individuals to the authorities.

“Umunnem, by working together, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable yuletide season for all. May God Almighty continue to be our strength and guide”.

In furtherance, the PGs were mandated to, “forward the above information to your various community platforms and also sensitive your people accordingly”.

The ASATU President, then, thanked and wished all a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year in advance
