Another Gas Explosion At Onitsha Head Bridge, Leaves One Dead, Six Injured

A devastating gas cylinder explosion occurred at a plumbing market along Uga Street, near Onitsha Head Bridge, on May 16, 2025. The blast, which was caused by a welding gas cylinder exposed to excess heat, resulting in one fatality and six injuries.

Police operatives attached to the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly responded to the incident, complementing the efforts of good-spirited individuals who helped rescue six victims. The injured are currently receiving treatment in a hospital, while the deceased has been deposited in a morgue.

According to police public relation officer in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga, he said “police have secured the area to prevent opportunistic crimes and are working to ensure the situation is under control”.Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has provided safety tips to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of gas cylinder equipment, secure storage, and adherence to manufacturer’s instructions.

The police command urges the public to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents.
