A ward chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. John Monday Marcus, has been confirmed dead following a violent clash with some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ukanafun Local Government Area.
The deceased, who chaired Ward 2, was allegedly attacked and killed during a scuffle that broke out over the sharing of cash largesse reportedly donated by a former PDP chieftain who recently defected to the APC.
According to eyewitnesses, the brawl began when Marcus allegedly attempted to corner the donated funds without distributing it as agreed, leading to outrage from both PDP and APC supporters present at the meeting
“Even some APC members were annoyed by his action and descended on him, smashing his head with broken bottles,” an eyewitness, Mr. Mfon Akpan, recounted.
“He died on the spot and his body was later taken to the mortuary.”
The donation, sources say, was part of the ongoing political realignments following Governor Umo Eno’s defection from PDP to APC, a move that has blurred party boundaries in the state and intensified power struggles ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by the APC Publicity Secretary for Ukanafun LGA, Hon. Stanley Sunday Peter, the party described the late Marcus as a “committed and selfless grassroots leader” whose death had left a deep void in the party structure.
“He played a pivotal role in mobilising support for the party in past elections and was respected for his humility, discipline, and service to the community,” the statement read.
Family members of the deceased also expressed shock, describing the killing as tragic and unacceptable.
Spokesperson for the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the incident and disclosed that an investigation has been launched.
“Yes, we are aware of the incident. Investigation is ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice,” the police spokeswoman stated.
