Commercial Drivers in Rivers State Threatens To Shut Down Operations Over Renewed Double Taxation, Touting In Obio/Akpor LGA

Commercial Drivers in Rivers State have threatened to embark on protest over Burdensome double taxation and in River State.

Speaking with our correspondent Anita Ogona via the Telephone, the state  Chairman of Drivers Welfare club of Nigeria (DWCN) Comrade Christopher Ezeali said

“We have raised several alarm about the activities Of touts in Obio/akpor, especially Rumuola and Rumuokoro axis to the state government, and  to even the security agents are who are reluctant in our plight,

The reason we are raising alarm again is that if nothing is done to tackle this daily touting Menace, we will resort to self help or protest then police will look for whom to blame for breach of peace Instead of the police to fight crime rather they have now turned themselves into revenue enforcers at rumours aiding and abetting.

The attached video shows them doing just that, we also have the videos one officer opara chijioke and Co patrolling with the same touts we have complained of to enforce compliance, its very unfortunate on 7th of February the Obio akpor local government chairman denied given out any authority to any individual to harass and collect tolls from motorists but within 48 hours he made a u-turn affirming he appointed one Mr julius uchenna to recruit and force compliance”

  • Information reaching our desk is that from Monday 17th Feb they will start enforcement of emblems by impounding vehicles for not having Obio akpor local government stickers, if that happens as planned and our vehicles are impounded at Sars Road where their dump is located at we shall shut down from Tuesday 18th February and protest to government house so that our voice can be heard because we cannot be forced into submissions for multiple taxation, for the past 12 years we only have one consolidated ticket called unified ticket from river state board of internal revenue but now local government has started printing their own tickets without the suspension of the consolidated ticket yet they want to start enforcement of emblems from motorists there is no local government law that empower them to issues out emblems and levies rather its the duty of the ministry of transport”.
