Court Remands Mother, Daughter For Using 2 Underage Girls As House Help

A Federal High Court in Lagos has remanded 25-year-old Nwobi Olubube Favour and her mother, Nwobi Ebele Angela (55) for allegedly using two underage girls as domestic servants.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro remanded the duo after they pleaded not guilty to a four-count charge of harboring and using two underage girls for domestic work brought against them by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

The two women, residing at B 41, Abijoh GRA, Chois Garden Estate Lekki, Lagos State, were accused of committing the offences between May and November 2023. The prosecutor, Uzunwa I. Egonu, told the court that their exploitative actions negatively impacted the physical, social and psychological development of the two teenagers.

In addition to the child labour allegation, NAPTIP also charged them with assaulting two officials of the agency, Ederibhalo Ajiegbe Elvis and Trust Oluwaseun Adekoye, while they were performing their duties at the agency’s office in GRA, Ikeja, on March 12, explaining that during the assault, they allegedly took a laptop and an iPhone 8 from the officials.

Following their plea, the prosecutor requested a trial date and urged the court to remand them.

Their lawyer requested a short adjournment for their bail applications to be filed. Justice Awogboro adjourned the matter to May 7.
