Isaac Fayose, brother to former Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose, has declared himself the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This announcement comes amidst a fresh crisis within the party, which has produced two factions.
Isaac Fayose also announced the suspension of several prominent party members, including the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, former governor Ayo Fayose, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and other members of the influential G5 group.
The G5 is a coalition of governors who have been at odds with the PDP leadership over party direction.
In his statement, Fayose challenged anyone unhappy with the move to take legal action, saying, “If you are not happy, you should go to court
This self-declaration by Fayose follows the recent upheaval within the party, with the suspension of Ambassador Illiya Damagum as Acting National Chairman.
The PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) swiftly moved to replace him with Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed, citing the party’s amended 2017 constitution.
The NWC, in its official communication, urged party leaders, stakeholders, and members to stay focused as they prepare for a critical National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for October 24, 2024.
