The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) on Friday, May 29, 2026, demonstrated its commitment to internal democracy as party members across Rivers State participated in a peaceful, orderly, and successful round of primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The exercise, which was conducted simultaneously across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state and in other parts of the country, featured contests for the Presidency, Governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly positions.
One of the major highlights of the exercise was the overwhelming support recorded by Opuda, Alabo Dumo Lulu-Briggs during the governorship primaries. At his polling centre in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, the respected philanthropist, businessman, and political leader emerged unopposed, as no opposing governorship aspirant was present at the venue.
Early reports from several local government areas across Rivers State also indicate a similar pattern of support, with field updates suggesting that Chief Lulu-Briggs received widespread endorsement from delegates and party faithful across multiple centres.
Although the official statewide results are still undergoing collation and ratification by the party’s national leadership, the outcome of the primaries has further reinforced the growing confidence many Rivers people have expressed in the leadership vision and developmental agenda championed by the governorship hopeful.
Observers who monitored the exercise across the state commended the process, describing it as peaceful, transparent, and well-coordinated. The impressive turnout of delegates and stakeholders was also viewed as a reflection of the enthusiasm within the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
A MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE AND UNITY
Speaking after the primaries, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs expressed profound appreciation to party faithful across Rivers State for their confidence, support, and commitment to the democratic process.
He described the peaceful conduct of the exercise as a victory for democracy and a testament to the maturity and unity of members of the National Democratic Congress.
Chief Lulu-Briggs noted that the outcome of the primaries was not a personal victory but a collective achievement for all party members who believe in building a more prosperous, inclusive, and progressive Rivers State.
He commended delegates, stakeholders, party leaders, and supporters across the state for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the process, emphasizing that the spirit of unity displayed during the primaries must be sustained as the party prepares for the next phase of the political journey.
According to him, Rivers State stands at a defining moment in its history, and the collective responsibility of leaders and citizens is to work together to create opportunities, strengthen institutions, and improve the quality of life for all residents.
Chief Lulu-Briggs also reaffirmed his commitment to issue-based politics, people-centred governance, and the pursuit of sustainable development that will benefit communities across the state.
As the NDC awaits the completion of the statewide collation process and official ratification by the national leadership, many political observers believe the successful conduct of the primaries has further strengthened the party’s position and readiness for the challenges ahead.
