Edun’s Sack: Why Nobody Around Tinubu is Safe

According to a report by Daily Post on Saturday, April 25, 2026, former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has reacted to the recent departure of Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, saying the development suggests that no official within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inner circle can consider their position entirely secure.

Dalung made the remarks while addressing journalists, noting that Edun’s long-standing relationship with the President makes his exit particularly significant. Edun, widely regarded as a close ally of Tinubu, had played a central role in shaping the administration’s economic policies since its inception.

Official communication from the government indicated that Edun stepped down from his position due to health concerns. However, there have also been conflicting reports suggesting that his exit may not have been entirely voluntary, fuelling speculation about internal dynamics within the administration.

Reacting to the situation, Dalung acknowledged the government’s explanation but hinted that there may be more to the development than has been publicly disclosed.

“I accept the official position that he resigned on health grounds, as stated in the announcement,” Dalung said. “However, it is important to recognise that the full picture may extend beyond what has been communicated to Nigerians.”

He emphasised that Edun’s close working relationship with President Tinubu over the years makes the development noteworthy, adding that such an outcome sends a broader message about the nature of political appointments within the current administration.

According to Dalung, the circumstances surrounding Edun’s exit underscore the reality that even those considered loyal or longstanding associates are not immune to sudden changes in government.

“This situation demonstrates that proximity to power does not necessarily guarantee permanence in office,” he added, suggesting that political office holders must remain aware of the fluid nature of governance.Politics

Edun’s tenure as finance minister came at a critical period for Nigeria’s economy, marked by reforms aimed at stabilising fiscal policy, addressing inflationary pressures, and managing exchange rate challenges.
