The family of twenty -seven Onyekachi Ugiri,from Anambra state who died 31st October 2023 after he was caught by a stray bullet allegedly fired by the Police during a protest against the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara says they are yet to see the corpse of their son one year after the incident apart from the video of his corpse they are in possession of.
Mrs Callister Ugiri,mother of the twenty-seven year old Onyekachi Ugiri in an interview with Journalists in Port Harcourt said
“My name is Callister Ugiri the mother of Onyekachi Ugiri who died 31st October,2023 when they went on a protest against removal of the Governor Sim Fubara .
“From then we have been looking for the dead body nowhere to be found,we went to many hospitals,mortuary till today,we did not see him.
“I know the Governor sent some persons to come and visit us,to say sorry to us,the Governor is a good man,I know he will remember us.
“I still have four children,Onyekachi is the one helping us,he is the one finding food for us,paying house rent for us.But now I dont have any helper again .
“My husband is not well,he has accident and in the village,is only me that is catering for the four children going to school .
Abeg the Governor,I need my child’s dead body so that we can take him to the village for proper burial .
“Anywhere they bury him,tell the Police people to show us, where they burial him,so that we will carry him and go back to our place.
“Governor please help me,for one year now things is hard for me,even though their school fees,everything is hard for me and my family now .It was Onyekachi who was helping me when he was alive but now nothing for me again.
“Governor please remember me and my family things is hard for us”.
Recall that Onyekachi died on October 31st,2024 the same day over one hundred youth protesting against impeachment of the Governor were arrested,detained in State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department(SCIID),PortHarcourt.
Mrs Callister Ugiri informed our reporters then,that she knew about the dead of her son through a video of his died the family discreetly obtained, the video was also cited by Journalists.
The then Commissioner of Police,CP Emeka Polycarp Nwonye while fielding questions during a press briefing two days after the incident denied allegation that Onyekachi Ugiri or anybody was caught by Police bullet.
CP Nwonye further said the Police did not see any dead body whether that of Onyejachi ugiri or any other protester.
