Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has directed the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Benibo Anabraba, to commence the immediate employment of children of veterans and fallen heroes, as part of measures to strengthen social and economic support for their families.
The directive was given on Thursday at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day held at the Isaac Boro Park Cenotaph, Port Harcourt.
Fubara said the policy underscored his administration’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and ensuring that their families are not left without support.
“I want to state clearly that, in line with our support for veterans and their families, the Secretary to the State Government has been given a marching order to ensure that the employment promised by the Rivers State Government for the children of our veterans is immediately implemented,” the governor said.
According to him, there should be no delay in executing the directive, stressing that employment opportunities form a critical part of the state’s social and economic intervention for affected families.
The governor urged Nigerians to draw lessons from the sacrifices of fallen heroes and to commit themselves to building a strong, resilient nation that honours its past and safeguards its future.
He noted that supporting veterans and their families remained a moral and constitutional responsibility of government, while calling on affluent individuals and corporate organisations to complement government efforts through job creation, healthcare support and educational assistance for the children of veterans.
Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to continue supporting the Federal Government, the armed forces and other security agencies in the task of maintaining peace and stability in Rivers State and the country at large.
He also pledged to deepen collaboration with military command structures in the state, assuring them of sustained logistical support aimed at improving operational efficiency and the welfare of personnel.
“We will continue to advance the welfare and well-being of members of the Nigerian Legion and their families through inclusive governance and the provision of direct social and economic opportunities,” he said.
The governor further promised to harness the nation’s diversity to build a united, peaceful and secure society founded on justice, freedom and fundamental rights, where economic opportunities are fairly distributed and accessible to all.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as a renewed commitment to strengthening the nation’s armed forces through modern equipment, improved welfare packages and enhanced remuneration.
Fubara said these measures had yielded tangible results in tackling security challenges, including the fight against Boko Haram and other forms of terrorism.
