Efforts are in top gear to reconcile the political bruhaha lingering in Rivers state, between The current Governor of the state Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor FCT minister Nyesom Wike following failed impeachment moves by lawmakers loyal to Wike in October 2023
The latest is coming from the IJAW YOUNG PROFESSIONALS & IJAW NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (INC) in a press conference held in port Harcourt on Sunday 16th June 2024 stated clearly that Wike does not in anyway hate Ijaw people
Details of the press briefings is as follows:
This press conference is to thank His Excellency Barr Nyesom E. Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for standing by the Ijaws during the 2023 Rivers State Governorship election.
We would like to state categorically that the Federal Capital Territory Minister does not hate Ijaws, as he has been portrayed to be. He has shown his love towards Ijaw people during and after his tenure as Rivers State Governor.
As the Governor of Rivers State, Wike demonstrated his commitment to the Ijaw people by choosing a deputy from Ijaw extraction and appointing our Ijaw sons and daughters to key positions in his administration, such as the Secretary to the State Government, Commissioner for Works, Head of Service, the Attorney General, and Speaker of the House. Furthermore, he handpicked the current Rivers Governor, His Excellency, Sim Fubara, as his successor, which goes a long way to show his love for the Ijaws and his balanced leadership style.
Significantly, even as the Minister of the FCT, Abuja, the former Governor has given very momentous appointments to Ijaws, such as Chief Boma Iyaye(EDFA NDDC), Desmond Akawor,(Revenue Mobilization) Chief Dax Judge Kelly(Boarder Community Dev Agency), and Amb. Maureen Tamuno (Abuja Investment Company Limited). He did this knowing that he doesn’t even need their support for any election or loyalty for personal aggrandizement, as Wike is and always has been a democratic and humane leader to the core.
We want to remind all Rivers Ijaws that in 2023, amidst the disunity of Ijaws in Rivers State, the former Governor could have seized the crisis as an excuse to pick his successor from any other ethnic group, yet he did what was noble and sacrificial for a balanced governance in our State.
We use this medium to remind the Governor of Rivers State that while his Economic Recovery Plan is fantastic, it could only be possible to woo potential investors into Rivers State when there is peace. Therefore, we urge him to tow the path of peace and unity, as this is the only way Rivers State can experience rapid and stable development.
