A joint security operation led by the Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State has dismantled a suspected criminal camp in Agulu-Ezechukwu, located in Aguata Local Government Area.
The operation, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, resulted in the death of one suspected armed criminal.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement released on Friday in Awka.
According to Ikenga, the successful raid was carried out by a combined team of security forces, including personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Navy, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Anambra State Vigilante Group.
He stated, “Operatives stormed the identified criminal hideout in Agulu-Ezechukwu in a well-coordinated operation. One armed hoodlum was neutralised during a fierce gunfight, and several items believed to be stolen or used in criminal activities were recovered at the scene.”
Items recovered from the camp included an ash-coloured Toyota Sienna with registration number EKY 03 FF, an unregistered white Mazda Hilux truck, a motorcycle, mechanical tools, and a range of household items. These included cooking pots, plastic gallons, food items, mattresses, assorted clothing, and other materials deemed suspicious.
The camp, believed to have been used as a base for criminal activities, was razed by the operatives after a prolonged seven-hour exchange of gunfire. SP Ikenga confirmed that the joint task force has launched a manhunt for other members of the gang who fled during the operation.
“Security teams are currently combing the area, following visible blood trails left by fleeing suspects. The operation is ongoing, and we are committed to restoring peace and security in the area,” he added.
The raid comes as part of intensified efforts by Anambra State security forces to dismantle criminal networks and restore order in volatile areas across the state. Authorities have urged residents to continue providing credible information to assist ongoing investigations and support the fight against crime.
