Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis- Rivers NUJ Partners RSU Dept. Of Journalism, Media Studies To Mark World Press Freedom Day

The Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ), Rivers State Council, in collaboration with the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Rivers State University will celebrate World Press Freedom Day on Friday, May 3, 2024.

The event which will be declared open by the Vice- Chancellor, Rivers State University(RSU), Professor Nlerum S. Okogbule, will be held at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies Auditorium, Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt.

In a statement jointly signed by the State Secretary of NUJ, Ike Wigodo and Head, Department of Journalism and Media Studies, RSU, Professor Barigbon Nsereka revealed that guest speakers at the event will be drawn from both the academia and the media industry.

Professor Aniefiok Jason Udoudo from the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, University of Port Harcourt; and Mr. Ignatius Chukwu, Regional Business Day Editor, South-South and South East, will be the guest speakers.

With the theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis” this year’s World Press Freedom Day will be attended by officials of Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project(HYPREP), Commissioner for Information, Hon Joseph Johnson, Permanent Secretary of Environment Rivers State, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environmental Sanitation, Hon Prince Obi Ohia and other environmentalists.

The event has been taking place since 1993 to discuss issues of press freedom and remember fallen heroes of journalism.
