Kano Court Remands Asaba Orphanage Owner Over Allegation Of Abduction Of 600 Children

The defendant, who resides in Asaba, Delta State, is standing trial alongside two others — Hauwa Abubakar and Nkechi Odlyne — on a 15-count charge bordering on conspiracy and kidnapping, contrary to Sections 97 and 273 of the Kano State Penal Code and Section 32(5) of the Children and Young Person’s Law of Kano State.According to the charge sheet, the defendants allegedly conspired between June 21, 2016, and December 20, 2021, to kidnap many Kano children and sell them in Delta State.

When the matter came up for arraignment, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Salisu Muhammad-Tahir, who also serves as the Kano Solicitor-General, informed the court that the first and second defendants, Abubakar and Odlyne, were absent.

“My Lord, we have tried our possible best to ensure their appearance before this court. We sincerely tender our apology,” Muhammad-Tahir told the court.

He appealed for an adjournment to enable the presence of the other defendants on the next hearing date and also requested that Mr. Christopher be remanded in a correctional facility.

However, defence counsel, Mr. Gideon Uzo, pleaded with the court to allow his client to be remanded instead in the custody of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

In her ruling, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu ordered that Christopher be remanded in a correctional centre, while directing NAPTIP to ensure that the two other defendants are produced in court at the next sitting.

The judge then adjourned the case to October 27 for further mention and commencement of trial.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the case stemmed from a petition filed in December 2022 by the Protection Against Abduction and Trafficking of Our Children (PATAMOC) to NAPTIP, over the alleged disappearance of more than 600 children from Kano since 2010. Out of the missing children, eight were later rescued.Lifestyle Article Subscription
