Leader of the United Kingdom Conservative party Kemi Badenoch has accused the Nigeria Police of engaging in acts of robbery against the citizens they are meant to protect. Her remarks came during an interview with a British journalist, as reported by The Niche.
When asked if she trusted the UK police, Badenoch expressed confidence in their integrity, contrasting it with her negative experiences in Nigeria. “I do. My experience with the Nigeria Police was very negative. Coming to the UK, my experience with the British Police was very positive,” she said.
Reflecting on her time in Nigeria, Badenoch recounted a troubling incident involving her brother. “The police in Nigeria will rob us,” she said with a laugh, before adding, “I remember the police stole my brother’s shoe and his watch.” Her account left the interviewer visibly shocked
Badenoch explained that such misconduct stems from systemic poverty and a culture of impunity. “It’s a very poor country. People do all sorts of things. So, giving people a gun is just a license to intimidate,” she noted
She contrasted this with her experience in the UK, recounting a burglary she experienced in 2004. “The police were there. They were helpful before they eventually caught the person,” she said, highlighting the professionalism of British law enforcement
