The National Leader Igbo bu Igbo South East Forum, High Chief Henry Uzozie, has urged the federal government to raise the minimum wage rate to a level that can take the Nigerian worker home when salaries are paid.
Chief Henry who is also the Financier of Henry Marshall Foundation, while fielding questions from newsmen who came to his Abuja residence appealed to the Federal Government and Nigeria Labour Congress to reach a compromise on the burning issue of workers minimum wage increase.
Chief Uzozie said that he is touched by the plight of Nigerian Workers welfare especially with the present economic hardship being experienced by all in the country, adding that the absence of workers in their workplaces these few days paralyzed the nation.
He further said that though what Labour is asking the Federal Government to pay them as minimum wage appears unrealistic, government should also consider the workers by suggesting what can be affordable. “Times are hard and paying any worker N30,000 as minimum wage is not realistic anymore as it cannot buy anything in the market these days
” Nigerian Workers are living in poverty in the midst of plenty and as such government should look closely at the economic indices and raise the minimum wage upwards so that the country can move forward, Chief Uzozie said.
