Newcastle United defeated Manchester United 2–1 at St James’ Park on Wednesday, with substitute William Osula scoring a dramatic 90th-minute winner to end the unbeaten run of United manager Michael Carrick.
Carrick had been close to becoming only the third United manager to remain unbeaten in his first 10 league matches, following Herbert Bamlett in 1927 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during the 2018–19 season.
Manchester United were also hoping to strengthen their push for a top-four finish after Liverpool lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa suffered a 4–1 defeat to Chelsea earlier.
The match featured a chaotic end to the first half, with stoppage time stretching to nine minutes despite the fourth official initially indicating three minutes. During that period, Bryan Mbeumo missed a clear opportunity before Jacob Ramsey, already on a yellow card, went down under a challenge from Senne Lammens and was shown a second yellow card for simulation.
Newcastle capitalised soon after. Anthony Gordon won a penalty after drawing a foul from Bruno Fernandes and calmly converted from the spot.
Fernandes later made amends by delivering a free-kick into the box that was headed in by Casemiro before halftime, bringing the visitors level.
Manchester United struggled to build momentum in the second half despite creating several chances late on. Aaron Ramsdale produced important saves, blocking a header from Leny Yoro and denying Joshua Zirkzee with an acrobatic stop.
The decisive moment came in the 90th minute when Kieran Trippier released Osula down the right. The forward dribbled past Tyrell Malacia and curled a shot past Lammens from the edge of the area, securing the victory for Newcastle and sparking celebrations among the home supporters.
Newcastle had the better of the chances overall, finishing with an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.22 compared to Manchester United’s 1.28. Osula’s winning goal came from his only shot of the match, with the chance valued at 0.06 xG.
The late strike marked Newcastle’s third 90th-minute winner in the Premier League this season, following similar late goals against Fulham in October and Leeds United in January. It was also the first time a substitute has scored a 90th-minute winner against Manchester United in the competition.
