The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a minor explosion occurred at its Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, in the early hours of Thursday, August 14, 2025. The incident, which briefly unsettled nearby residents, was swiftly contained with no casualties reported.
In a statement signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army explained that the blast originated within one of the storage facilities of the 42nd Engineers Brigade Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Squadron.
The explosion, Anele said, triggered a small fire, which was quickly extinguished through the combined efforts of personnel from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment and the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service.
No Loss of Life, Minimal Damage
The Army spokesperson confirmed that no lives were lost and no injuries were sustained. Structural damage was limited to the affected building and certain stored materials. A detailed assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of material loss.
The Nigerian Army remains committed to the safety and security of its personnel and members of neighbouring communities,” Anele assured.
Investigation Underway
The Army has launched a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to prevent any recurrence.
Residents of Ilese and surrounding areas are being urged to remain calm, as the situation has been fully brought under control. By midday, normal activities had resumed within and around the barracks, and officials confirmed that the incident posed no further threat to the public.
