COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF ZONE F, (SOUTH-SOUTH) EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (ZEC) MEETING OF THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ) HELD AT THE NUJ COMPLEX, MOSCOW, PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE.
The Zone F, (South-South) Executive Council (ZEC) Meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) which convened from Wednesday 20th to Friday, 22nd August, 2025, at the NUJ Complex, Moscow, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was presided over by the Zonal Vice President, NUJ Zone F, Comrade Opaka Dokubo.
The meeting deliberated extensively on a wide range of issues affecting the South-South geopolitical region, the media industry, and the welfare of journalists within the region.
After robust discussions, the meeting resolved as follows:
- The ZEC commended the Government of Rivers State for maintaining the Peace and the conducive atmosphere for citizens to engage in lawful social and economic activities in the state. It further appreciated the Rivers State Government for the cordial relationship with the NUJ Rivers State Council.
- The ZEC directed Chairmen and Secretaries of Councils within the Zone to uphold professionalism by revalidating the membership status of journalists as a measure to curb quackery in the profession.
- Following a tour of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) in Ogoniland, the ZEC commended HYPREP for its effective remediation efforts and livelihood restoration in the area, while urging the Federal Government to extend the interventions to the entire Niger Delta region that is devastated by hydrocarbon pollution.
- The ZEC called on the Federal Government to urgently address the deplorable state of trunk A roads and highways and other infrastructure in the region while activating necessary security measures to contain imminent threats to lives and livelihoods of the people of the South-South region.
- The ZEC congratulated the Deputy National President of the NUJ, Comrade Ambimbola Oyetunde, on her elevation to the position of the Lagos State Bureau Chief of the FRCN.
- The ZEC strongly frowned at the unwholesome and indiscriminate presentation of awards using the name of the NUJ by individuals and groups without authorization by the National Secretariat. The ZEC warned that severe sanctions will henceforth be meted out to anyone or group found wanting in this regard. The ZEC further reminded members in the zone that all activities bearing the insignia of the NUJ that do not conform with the constitution of the Union will be severely dealt with.
- The ZEC commended the Rivers State Council for successfully hosting the South-South Zonal Meeting.
- The ZEC commended State Governors in the South South region for their support to the leadership and members of the NUJ in their States and urged for more.
- The ZEC appreciated the National President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, for the appointment of it members into the CWC of the Union.
- The ZEC urged Council leaders to ensure that members under their watch continue to remain and maintain top notch professionalism in practice as this continues to remain the hallmark of excellent Journalism focus.
