Minister for federal capital territory (FCT), Abuja, Nyesom Wike has hinted on his preferred 2027 governorship candidate for Rivers state.
During his thank-you visit to the Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers state on 3rd of January, 2026, Nyesom Wike while speaking to the crowd, signaled that the current executive director of finance and administration of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), honourable Boma Iyaye is his preferred candidate for Rivers gubernatorial election, 2027.
Wike praised honourable Boma Iyaye for his long-standing loyalty and commitment to their age-long political comradeship, insinuating that he will right the wrongs of his 2023 decision in Rivers state. He reiterated that sponsoring governor Siminalayi Fubara’s governorship campaign in 2023 was a grievous mistake which he looks forward to correcting in 2027.Politics
Sources close the former governor of Rivers state claim that Nyesom Wike is likely going to sponsor honourable Boma Iyaye in another political platform other than the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) or the All Progressive Congress (APC) where the national leadership of the party have reportedly concluded on adopting governor Sim Fubara as its governorship candidate for Rivers state in 2027. However, this remains a speculation at this point as neither the state leadership nor the national leadership of the APC has confirmed this claims.
According to speculations, Nyesom Wike and his political allies are considering National Democratic Party (NDP) as alternative to the APC and PDP. He believes that if the speculated conspiracy against his political interest in Rivers state is real, he will lead his allies to the NDP where honourable Boma Iyaye would fly the party’s governorship ticket.
While this remains an unhatched plan, it’s reported that president Bola Ahmed Tinubu and some staunch members of the presidency are averse to Wike sponsoring a candidate against whomever emerged the APC’s governorship candidate in Rivers state. But Wike’s who believes that his political survival and relevance lies on the Rivers state governorship seat, is determined to ousting governor Sim Fubara in 2027 while his loyalist takes over as the state’s Governor
