The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has made a donation of five million naira (₦5,000,000.00) to De Marillac Centre; a charity home in Rivers State.
In a series of posts made on his X (formerly twitter) account, Obi said the “modest donation” is based on his conviction that “in achieving a secure and productive society, we must effectively care for the future of our children, especially the vulnerable ones, by taking them off the streets and empowering them for the future.”
While thanking the centre for their efforts in helping the downtrodden in the society, the former Anambra Governor encouraged “other well-meaning Nigerians and donor agencies to join this good cause by always caring for the poor and the less privileged, to help ameliorate the increasing hardship on the people.”
The post reads:
In continuation of my visits to institutions whose roles are critical to the poor and less privileged in our society, yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, I visited the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent De Paul.
This group has over the years devoted itself to caring for the poor, the abandoned and vulnerable members of society and the sick, especially people with leprosy, in Nigeria and Africa.
I was at one of their centres, De Marillac Centre for Street Children, in Diobu, Port Harcourt, where they keep and care for vulnerable children of society and I supported them with a modest donation of N5 million.
In achieving a secure and productive society, we must effectively care for the future of our children, especially the vulnerable ones, by taking them off the streets and empowering them for the future.
I thank the Daughters of Charity, who through their various charitable outreaches have continued to make society better.
I encourage other well-meaning Nigerians and donor agencies to join this good cause by always caring for the poor and the less privileged, to help ameliorate the increasing hardship on the people.
I am always committed to any project that will have a positive impact on society and bring about the much-desired national development.
I believe that by investing in the lives of these vulnerable children, we will give them a better future and enable them to become successful and contribute effectively to a New Nigeria.
