President Tinubu Declares State Of Emergency On Security Training Schools As NEC Committee Visits Police Training College, Ikeja

President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency on Nigeria’s security training institutions as part of renewed efforts to strengthen national security and enhance the capacity of law enforcement agencies across the country.

Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC) Committee on the Overhaul of Police and Other Security Training Institutions, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, disclosed this on Tuesday,4th November,2025 during an inspection visit to the Police Training College, Ikeja, Lagos, alongside five other governors who are members of the committee.

The visiting governors included Uba Sani (Kaduna), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Kefas Agbu (Taraba), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa). The committee’s Secretary is former Inspector-General of Police, Baba Usman.

According to Mbah, the president’s directive followed his expression of deep concern at the 152nd NEC meeting held two weeks ago over the deplorable condition of training facilities for security personnel nationwide.

“President Tinubu believes we can only get the best out of our personnel if they are trained in conducive environments with access to 21st-century tools and teaching methods,” Mbah said

He clarified that the declaration had no connection to recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump on Nigeria’s security situation, describing the initiative as a proactive measure by the Tinubu administration to rebuild the nation’s security architecture.

“The president recognises the need for bold and urgent steps to restore the pride, professionalism, and confidence of our security personnel. You cannot expect men and women protecting our communities to be trained in inhumane environments. This is a forward-thinking move, not a reactionary one,” Mbah added.

Mbah said that the committee had been given 30 days to submit its report and had constituted two teams to inspect facilities across northern and southern Nigeria.

“We have listened to your concerns and carried out on-the-spot assessments. The intervention will be immediate, as this committee does not have the luxury of time,” he added.

During the visit, the governors and committee members engaged the Commandant of the Police Training School (PTS), Ikeja, ACP Udu Moses Ogechi, PhD, who briefed them on the challenges confronting the institution and the urgent need for government intervention to upgrade its infrastructure and training equipment.

Commandant of the Police Training College (PTC), Ikeja, AIG Omolara Oloruntola psc, also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the initiative, lamenting the infrastructural decay that has plagued the college since its establishment by the British colonial administration in 1949.

She emphasized that only a swift and comprehensive rehabilitation could restore the institution’s lost glory and improve the overall training standards of the Nigerian Police Force.
