Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress Dumps Fubara, Declares Support For Wike

A dramatic political shift, the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress has abandoned Governor Siminalayi Fubara and pledged its full support to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The announcement was made by the group’s chairman, George Sekibo, during Wike’s “thank you” tour of Okrika Local Government Area on Saturday. Sekibo described the ongoing rift between Fubara and Wike as “very unfortunate” but emphasised that the Ijaw community remains deeply grateful.

He highlighted Wike’s pivotal role in elevating Fubara, an Ijaw native, to the governorship—a move that enjoyed statewide backing.

“Please don’t look at him and think we are all ungrateful people. Ijaw people are very grateful people.

“That is why we abandoned him (Fubara) and said we will follow you. You have done so much for Ijaw people in Rivers. Whatever you say we should do, is what we will do,” Sekibo declared.

The chairman vowed unwavering support for Wike and President Bola Tinubu, adding, “We are grateful people and that is why we are following you. We will not leave you because you have been there for us.”

Okrika Local Government chairman, Akuro Tobin, hailed Wike as his “political godfather,” crediting him for uplifting numerous locals into elective and appointed roles. Tobin pledged that the area’s men, women, and youth stand firmly with Wike and Tinubu.

Speaking for Okrika women, Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State Assembly, Linda Stewart, praised Wike’s unmatched empowerment of women and offered prayers for his success.

Wike expressed gratitude for the support and lauded Tinubu as a man who keeps his promises. He urged Okrika residents to back leaders of proven integrity.

During a palace visit to the Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom, King Akete Tom, Wike praised the ruler for fostering unity. He hinted at a firm decision on the 2027 elections, promising details soon from his team, while asking the monarch to stay neutral.

“It is not going to be business as usual. Allow us to play our game, and if there is any problem, call us to settle,” the minister advised.
