Rivers Innovation Gains Global Spotlight, As SPE Hails Owunari’s Patent

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) has commended Mr. Ricky Brown Owunari for what it described as a remarkable stride in global engineering content creation.

The recognition came after Mr. Owunari disclosed to newsmen in Port Harcourt within the week that his newly patented Dewaxer Flow Enhancer and Downhole tool had secured official endorsement under U.S. Patent No. 12,448,868 B2.

He stated that since the innovation has earned the approval of the United States Government, it should also be adopted as a Rivers State brand, representing the state’s growing intellectual and technological capacity.

According to him, the breakthrough is a proof that Niger Deltans have moved beyond the era of militancy and are now producing world-class content, research outputs, and technical solutions.

SPE officials at the briefing described the patented technologies as timely tools designed to tackle wax deposition in crude oil wells, a major issue that often disrupts production and increases maintenance costs.

They emphasised that the achievement highlights why Rivers State must invest more in supporting innovators whose works carry global potential.

Industry experts explained that the patented tool originated from years of field observation, experimentation, and research aimed at improving flow assurance in challenging well conditions.

They urged the Federal Government to show greater appreciation for home-grown innovations, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to formally acknowledge and encourage breakthroughs emerging from the Niger Delta.

Mr. Owunari also outlined the development process behind the tool, stating that the design was engineered to enhance production efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve operational safety.

Stakeholders at the event issued a caution against piracy, warning that the unauthorised copying of patented technologies undermines national progress and discourages innovators.

Analysts noted that the achievement reinforces the narrative of a new Rivers State anchored on creativity, content development, and technical excellence rather than conflict.

The session ended with a call for stronger collaboration between government and industry players to protect intellectual property and advance Rivers State as a greenhouse for innovation-driven content.
The Content as was gathered, will solve some riddles in the Oil and gas sector as well as other relevant sectors of the economy.
