During the Channels Television interview, Professor Benjamin Okaba gave details of a direct encounter he had with members of the group involved in the Rivers State political controversy.
Speaking between 07:23 to 07:55, the President of the Ijaw National Congress said, “they came to my house in Yenagoa to ask us to condemn Fubara, and we told them clearly: we will never abandon our governor, no matter the pressure.”
Okaba explained that the visit was aimed at persuading the INC leadership to publicly turn against Governor Siminalayi Fubara amid the impeachment dispute.
He said the request was firmly rejected, as the organisation saw no justification for withdrawing its support for the governor under the circumstances.
According to him, the INC had already taken a clear position and was not prepared to reverse it based on external lobbying.
The INC president said the group’s attempt to secure condemnation of the governor reflected the intensity of the political pressure surrounding the crisis.
He added that such approaches were part of a wider effort to influence public opinion and weaken support for the Rivers State governor.
Okaba noted that despite these efforts, the INC remained resolute in its position regarding Fubara.
