University Forced To Close Down, Suspends Lectures Over Insecurities

Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JoSTM), formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi announced a one-week closure following a security crisis on campus.

The decision comes after four female students were abducted by unknown gunmen on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. while the students were on their way to a lecture hall to study.

The attackers took them to an unknown location, sparking outrage among the student body.

In response, the university’s Registrar, Dr. John David, released a statement on Wednesday, expressing sympathy for the victims and their families.

He announced a mid-semester break and instructed all students to leave the school hostels by 4:00 p.m. on February 26, 2025.

The university strongly condemned the attack and assured the public that security agencies have been notified and are actively working to secure the students’ release.

As part of its response, the university has also postponed an Inaugural Lecture that was scheduled for February 26, 2025.

Officials have assured students and staff that security measures are being strengthened to prevent future incidents.
