Over 100 girls from the Holy Rosary College Port Harcourt has benefitted from the free Sanitary pads distribution to Mark 2025 World Menstrual day with a Health talk on Menstrual hygiene and Dangers of Harvesting Eggs on Young Girls in Port Harcourt.
Speaking to the young girls, the chairman of Media Advocates for health Rivers State Mrs Jenewari Harry -Utomi tasked the young girls to embrace menstrual hygiene and discard the shame often associated with their monthly flow, stressing that menstruation should be seen as a sign of strength and confidence, not secrecy or embarrassment as that is what makes you a proper woman.
She emphasized that menstrual education should start from home, urging parents to talk openly to their daughters about periods and also herped on the trending Eggs harvesting and donation by young girls and ladies for temporary benefits.
she warned that there are so many side effects associated with eggs harvesting which the promoters will not easily disclose to the young girls until they girls grow older.
Jenewari Harry -Utomi said some of the side effects of egg donation includes
Abdominal Pain
Breast Tenderness
Bloating
Mood Swings
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome
Infection and bleeding
Ovarian Torsion
Potential injury to the bladder, nearby blood vessels and bowel
Psychological distress and urge them to stay away from all enticing offers or pity those demanding for egg help or assistance.
Also sensitizing the young girls Dr Davida Ogona said parents have a critical role to play in giving tips to their daughters “They’ve been in these shoes before. They must teach their children how to stay clean and unashamed. Menstruation is not a curse.”
Hygiene is more than just habit — it’s a foundation for self-confidence. Understanding your cycle is key to good health and pride in your body,” she told the students. She shared practical tips, encouraging girls to track their cycles using calendars or mobile phones, and to prioritize proper washing and sun-drying of underwear to prevent infections.
Speaking further on Hygiene Dr Tosin Shaba shared on how to manage the trauma that often comes with the first flow,” distinguishing and identifying various colors associated with flow and when to seek medical help.
“ she said There’s no limit to how much people agitate for menstrual hygiene, and most times, it’s not just limited to schoolgirls but even adults, she Urged them them seek medical guidance, understanding, and confidence.
”Never soak your panties for long , wash immediately and dry under the sun. Always stay clean when on your flow,” wear light and airer dress and also allow air in that region she noted
For many of the students of Holy Rosary College Port Harcourt, the program was a turning point, SS1 student, expressed gratitude, saying:
“I feel proud of my body now. This program made me understand that my period is not something to hide.”
