With just few hours to the kick-off of the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, former world champion and women’s 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, has criticized the Nigerian government over the kit provided for herself and other athletes representing the country at the championship.
Amusan voiced her concerns over what she perceived as unprofessionalism and lack of coordination within the federation.
In a video she shared on her Snapchat, the World record holder and reigning 100m hurdles champion, Tobi Amusan, publicly criticised the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for failing to provide standard competition kits for Nigerian athletes ahead of the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan.
Amusan said unlike other countries that provide their contingents with kits in suitcases, the Nigerian government hands them their own kits in nylon bags with little or nothing significant inside it.
‘’This country will steadily embarass you. Una come say make people nor switch allegiance? Una never ready. No singlets. Nothing!’’ she said
She further stated that although the Jamaican authorities are also lagging behind with regards providing for their contingents, they are not as worse as their Nigerian counterpart.
Switching between English and Pidgin, she lamented:

“As it is now, I have to wear an Adidas black tight. I go show you wetin Jamaica… When I tell you say Jamaica dey the same WhatsApp group with Nigeria, but dem no worse like Nigeria. In Nigeria, all the other countries give their athletes two kits. See wetin Nigeria pack give us. This country (Nigeria) is really embarrassing.”
Athletes Raise Broader Concerns
Amusan’s remarks add to a growing list of complaints from Nigerian athletes about poor preparation and welfare.
Earlier this year, Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre revealed that the women’s national football team lacked access to basic recovery facilities such as a gym or swimming pool during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
