You Are Supposed To Be Agent Of Light Not Darkness, Protesting Residents Tell PHED

Residents of Wokoma, Wokomalane ,Dim, Ovim, Obuagu, parts of Obaziolu streets in Mile 3 Diobu,PortHarcourt on Monday,July 28,2025 protested the failure of PortHarcourt Electricity Distribution Company to repair a faulty transformer at Wokoma/Obuagu street,Mile 3 Diobu,PortHarcourt which has thrown the area into darkness for close to one month.

The protesters stormed the PHED office at Abeokuta street,opposite NITEL office D/Line,PortHarcourt as early as 8:30am on Monday carrying placards with various inscriptions like “PHED You Are Supposed To Be Agent Of Light Not Darkness,No Light No Payment, We Are Tired Of Paying For Darkness” etc .

In an interview with Journalists, one of the protesters Collins Ebo said “since 25th June no light in the area and we have been complaining about the light and have wrote series of letters.We have not heard anything from them.So today, we decided to go to their office to protest, so we can have light” .

Another protester George Nwachukwu said ” this transformer had issues before,we met them which PHED said anything vandalization is not their responsibility,by the special grace of God the former Mayor and other residents helped us to put things in order which PHED did not spend a dine

“Now, the transformer have problem which is their own responsibility to fix it up but now is almost a month,the PHED refused to come and fix it but we are paying light bill every day.

“PHED is collecting over six million naira in a month in the affected area.They are collecting money without giving light,robbing us without gun,we say no to it.

“They should come and put our transformer in order and give us light”.

Another female protester who spoke disclosed that the absence of light is affecting her business and she is paying her light bill .She stated that is being difficult to preserve their food.She revealed that all the food in her refrigerator has gotten soured.

Other protesters lamented effect of heat waves on them and their family on non rainy days.

Our correspondent reports that Some senior officials of PHED later held private meeting with representatives of the protesters in their office and in the meeting.
We gathered that the senior PHED officials promised to address the issue within two days.
