2 Weeks After Calling For Assistance, Nollywood Legend Amaechi Muonagor Joins His Ancestors Aged 62

Veteran Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor has  suffered kidney failure and was on dialysis.

The sudden news of his demise came just few days less than two weeks ago in his viral video was seen, where he was spotted crying bitterly from his sickbed as he solicited for funds to help him have Kidney transplant in India, is reportedly dead.

He died today, Sunday 24th day of march 2024.

AGN the umbrella association he belongs to have not issued any statement on his demise , neither has his family

His death comes weeks after another Nollywood actor Mr Ibu died

A few months ago, Muonagor, a well-known figure in Nollywood, was said to be dealing with kidney related issues; however, it appears that things have become worse since then.

But in a video that went viral online, he can be seen stumbling to speak while lying on his sick bed.

The actor, whose voice was barely discernible in the film, began by wishing everyone well.

Many emotional comments were made by online users who identified with the sick actor in response to the film. His Nollywood colleague Kingsley Orji, who was seated next to him, made an appeal on his behalf

Amaechi Muonagor left the teaching hospital some days ago due to financial constraints.

He stated that the illness had affected his speech and urged fans and well-wishers to contribute for a transplant surgery.

“It has not been easy. He has been in this condition for months now. He wants to go for a kidney transplant. What we want is for you to help us for him to travel to India,” Orji said.

“He just came back from the ICU in Nnewi teaching hospital a couple of days ago. He was responding to treatment but not very well.

“We decided to bring him home because there was no money but it is not advisable. He barely talks well. Please, he needs your help.”

Recall in November 2023, Amaechi muonagor had cried out for help after revealing that he was battling paralysis which has affected half of his first leg

His words: “I’m sick, this thing that is called stroke caught up with me, and from there they rushed me to the hospital. The first hospital they rushed me to was in Nnewi, where I spent some two months and I was referred to Teaching Hospital Nnewi and here I am.

“I was on a movie set with Emeka Ani, Patience Ozokwo, Rita Edochie, and Ebele Okaro. I was about to enter my car when I was struck with this problem and since then it has been getting worse. Right now, I can’t move, I can’t walk on my own. Half of my left leg is paralyzed, my left hand is not movable, so it is a problem for me.

“I’m calling on well spirited individuals to come to my assistance, to see how they can help me. It is paralysis, half of my body.”

Reacting to the video, many people have been expressing their sadness, saying they are praying for the actor and pledging money.

muonagor’s health issues, and the death of Mr Ibu earlier this month, highlight a huge problem facing Nollywood actors and their healthcare.

As they are paid on a film-by-film basis many are not part of a health insurance scheme or able to make regular payments. Although the Actors Guild of Nigeria says it has been able to get an insurance company to cover the industry, not all performers have signed up.

During his career muonagor has appeared in dozens of films, including Aki and Paw Paw, one of his most famous roles where he played the father of two mischief-making, over-exuberant teenagers.

Despite competition from foreign movie industries, Nollywood continues to maintain a prominent place among Nigerian and wider African audiences.
