Commotion erupted in a community after the first son allegedly refused to allow his family bury their late mother in the family compound unless he was “settled.”
According to a retired police officer who spoke at the compound, the deceased, Mrs. Nwawere, had a husband, the late Godwin Nwawere, with whom she bore a son, Uzoma Nwawere (the first son), and several daughters who are all married.
He explained that while the married daughters took care of their mother, they allegedly neglected their brother and failed to accord him the respect traditionally due to a first son. The officer further claimed that the daughters, who are married to men from Mbano in Imo State, “connived” with their mother to sideline Uzoma.
Speaking in Igbo, the retired officer said: “Godwin Nwawere has passed on. He and his wife had Uzoma, their first son, and other children including five daughters, who are all married. But Uzoma was not given the respect due to a first son. The daughters, together with their mother, treated him unfairly. Now, Uzoma has been living at home on credit, which seemed to please his sisters who are married out.”
Following their mother’s death, Uzoma allegedly insisted that before she could be buried in the family compound—now under his inheritance—his sisters and their husbands must first settle
