Lagos State he Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed that his administration is planning to increase the minimum wage for workers to N85,000.
He disclosed this while speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday evening.
Sanwo-Olu said, โYou mentioned minimum wage and what I need to throw in for my people. Iโm glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which weโve discussed with our union, is N85,000 today.โItโs not a competition, so Iโm not going to say that weโre paying more than some other people; itโs a function of affordability and a function of capacity,โ the governor saidโ.
Speaking further, he stressed that the adjustment was made to reflect the cost of living in Lagos, adding that it was important for workers to earn a wage that aligns with the stateโs economic realities.
Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that the government had implemented a salary increase earlier in the year and expressed his ambition to raise the minimum wage to N100,000 by January 2025.I hope to return in January to announce that we have raised Lagosโ minimum wage to N100,000, not to outshine anyone, but to ensure that our workers can earn a living wage and feel the impact of government support,โ he explained.
Also, the governor reiterated his administrationโs commitment to improving the welfare of Lagos State workers and ensuring that the government remains responsive to their needs.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu signed the new โฆ70,000 minimum wage bill into law in July, ending months of disagreements and negotiations between representatives of government, labour unions and the organised private sector.
